Rogue One Character Details and a Special Guest Villain are Confirmed

***Spoiler Warning: Spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, including character names and information ahead. Spoilers***

Just about a month ago, give or take, a listing for The Official Visual Story Guide accidentally (the information was later removed) revealed names and a few tidbits about several Rogue One characters; even before that, Mads Mikkelsen let loose with details about who he was playing in the film. This time, however, the information dump is coming directly from the Disney/Star Wars machine, with new photos and character biographies purposefully released into the universe. In that vein, though these are definitely Rogue One **Spoilers**, my feeling is that it’s information we’re meant to have before the film, rather than anything that’s going to ruin the movie. Of course, that choice is a very personal one, so, once again, if you don’t want specifics, I’d suggest you run screaming now (screaming optional, depending upon the day you’re having).

Without further ado, here’s the lowdown on the main Rogue One characters:

This fine-looking fella who is most definitely not in costume (I guess that’s still a secret) is Mads Mikkelsen, who plays our rebel team leader’s father, Galen Erso. Likened by the actor himself to Oppenheimer, aka the father of the atomic bong bomb, Galen possesses knowledge wanted by rebels and the Empire alike … presumably, that knowledge has to do with completing the Death Star.

We already knew Felicity Jones is playing rebel leader Jyn Erso; what we didn’t know is that apparently Pops (Mads) abandoned her (or she, him) and she’s been on her own since the age of 15. Survival skills (read: fighting) at hand, when Jyn is detained by the Rebellion, it’s decided she could be useful and a deal is struck. If you’ll recall, at the beginning of the Rogue One trailer, charges are read off and Jyn states her name — it makes perfect sense. As to her mission, it sounds like she’s going to have an unplanned run-in with dear old dad.

Forest Whitaker’s role had not been previously revealed, but we now know he plays Saw Gerrera, first seen fighting beside Darth Vader and his sister Steela in Netflix’s The Clone Wars. The rebel extremist with a detailed history is considered to be “on the fringe” of the Rebel alliance; he’ll be an ally to Jyn’s team, though they’re not always entirely certain what Saw is up to.

Bloodline‘s strongest asset, Ben Mendelsohn, will once again play a dark-hearted character. Director Orson Krennic is an Imperial leader with high aspirations and a willingness to completely destroy the rebels to achieve them.

Jiang Wen is rebel squad leader Baze Malbus, the yin to his spiritual friend Chirrut Imwe‘s (Donnie Yen) yang. Chirrut is a blind warrior who’s learned to fight without his sight, and Baze is his heavily armored protector.

CaptainCassianAndorDiego Luna

Diego Luna’s strict Rebel Alliance officer, Captain Cassian Andor, is tasked with keeping Jyn in line as she leads her group’s mission (steal the Death Star plans).

The squad’s lead pilot, Riz Ahmed’s Bodhi Rook, sounds slightly stereotypical — volatile, but experienced — but you know how these things go. Cocky pilots eventually come down to earth, else … well, let’s not think about favorite flyers dying, shall we?

Finally, K-2S0 (Alan Tudyk) is described as “Chewbacca’s personality in a droid’s body,” which means we simply cannot wait to meet him.

The last bit of exciting Rogue One news seemed pretty obvious, but it’s still nice to have an official confirmation:
