Get Your First Good Look at Our Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 Heroes Fighting an … Abilisk

James Gunn is the swell kind of director we love, sharing goofy photos and concept art along his moviemaking path. He gives just enough information to intrigue, but not enough to know exactly what’s going on. As already proven by the incomparably fun outing that was Guardians of the Galaxy, we already know we have such a wonderful 2017 ride to look forward to. I mean, we have Chris Pratt as arguably the most charismatic MCU superhero yet:

and now we’re going to get THIS GUY as his father:

Not only is Kurt Russell Star-Lord’s dad, he’s also Ego the Living Planet (Thor: Ragnarok cameo?), which may explain another photo Gunn posted a while back. Mjölnir mystery solved?

Let’s get to Gunn’s latest share: a preview of Empire magazine’s upcoming Vol. 2 feature story. Here we see concept art with Gamora, Drax, Peter, and Rocket all taking on some nightmarish creature that morphs together a cephalopod, some kind of ‘saurus, and Alien‘s xenomorphish layered jaws. Baby Groot is either spacerunning in fear, has just been flung by one of the critter’s appendages, or thinks this is another dance party.

Groot: “Whee”!

Good gods, how am I supposed to sleep tonight? Gunn’s Facebook page identifies the creature in Andy Park’s concept art as an Abilisk, which fans attending SDCC got a glimpse of in the Guardians 2 teaser (spoilerish details at the link). Here’s wishing they’d hurry up and share that footage with the rest of us but, until then, we’ll take all the cool pictures the director wants to share.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also stars Zoë Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sean Gunn, Glenn Close (Irani Rael), Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha) , Sylvester Stallone (Nova Corps soldier), Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Chris Sullivan (Taserface); it hits theaters May 5, 2017.
