This is a glorious time for science fiction/fantasy fans: with HBO, Amazon, and Netflix all doing their own original series and several films headed our way, we’re finally back in the black, so to speak. First up in today’s news is Netflix’s $90 million acquisition (I guess they believe in this one), Bright, which features an excellent, experienced cast and Suicide Squad/End of Watch director David Ayer at the helm .
Right? Now, get a load of the cast: Will Smith, Noomi Rapace, Joel Edgerton …
… Chris Browning (Westworld, Timeless, Agent Carter), Andrea Navedo (Jane the Virgin, The Leftovers), and Lucy Fry (Wolf Creek, 11.22.63).
Though the plot is being closely guarded, the fantasy/police thriller featuring Smith and Edgerton as a human and Orc (respectively) pairing, trying to protect a magical wand while being chased down by criminals, cops, and magical creatures. Navedo stars as a police captain in the Max Landis-scripted Netflix release; Bright is expected to stream and be in theaters next year.
We’ll see part of Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s second Sense8 batch this December in a Who-style Christmas Special, and the rest of Season 2 in the spring of 2017. Writer J. Michael Straczynski calls cancellation rumors “traffic-driving clickbait,” and writers of such drivel, “idiots.”
