Star Trek: Discovery may have lost one fearless leader, but the new series just gained another. In positively thrilling news, The Walking Dead‘s Sonequa Martin-Green has been announced as the next Starfleet officer, Lieutenant Commander Rainsford aka Number One (to honor Majel Barrett’s original Star Trek pilot character). Martin-Green has been absolutely stellar as TWD’s Sasha Williams, and our hopes and dreams for a diverse, female-led ship couldn’t have been better answered.
After seeing what Westworld‘s Thandie Newton has done — stepping up as the series’ most exciting, dynamic character and performer (she really should be up for Best Actress, rather than Supporting) — and how grand that diverse cast has been, there is no excuse for not creating lead roles for people of color; the purported need for a white male head of the cast in major series is a myth.
Martin-Green joins Doug Jones’ science officer, Lieutenant Saru, Anthony Rapp’s Stamus, Michelle Yeoh’s Captain Georgiou, Shazad Latif as Klingon Commanding Officer, Kol, Chris Obi as Klingon leader, T’Kuvma, and Mary Chieffo as Klingon Battle Deck Commander, L’Rell. Star Trek: Discovery will air on CBS All Access and (within 24 hours), also on Netflix next May.
