I’m not sure I realized we needed a series about Superman’s grandfather, great-grandfather and his home planet history, but by gum, now I (we) know!
SyFy’s grand new take on the Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s DC comic history of Kal-El’s family has brilliant writers: David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, Dark City, Blade) and Ian B. Goldberg (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Once Upon a Time, Flash Forward), the pilot is directed by Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders, Sherlock, Doctor Who, MI-5, The Girl with All the Gifts), and the cast is excellent:
Game of Thrones‘ and Rogue One‘s Ian McElhinney is Val-El, Seg-El’s grandfather.
Broadchurch and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’s Georgina Campbell is Lyta Zod, a Kryptonian warrior and daughter of General Alura Zod (Ann Ogbomo).
And, Florence Foster Jenkins and The Halcyon‘s Cameron Cuffe is Seg-El, Kal-El’s grandfather; “a younger version of the grumpier comic character”.
This first teaser, set 200 years before Man of Steel events, has me more intrigued than expected.
*Unfortunately, Warner Bros. has squashed all the online versions of the apparently unofficial trailer, so you’ll have to make do with the images and gifs I caught. I’ll update this post as soon as a trailer becomes available.
The series will follow Seg’s fight to gain back his family’s honor and save his planet, all while getting it on in 21st century style. All in?
Krypton also stars Rasmus Hardiker, Elliot Cowan, Wallis Day and Aaron Pierre; it premieres on SyFy later this year.
