Darren Aronofsky’s (Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler) gone back to his psycho-horror tripping thing, and since he hasn’t managed to rope me in so quickly since Black Swan — which I loved — can I get an “amen”? There’s something magical about the way the writer/director’s mind works and it speaks to me, though whether that’s a good thing or not, who can say?
This is the first footage from mother!, which boasts a phenomenal cast — Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, Domhnall Gleeson — and it is disarming, unclear, ominous and delightfully crazy; in other words, I’m ready to buy a ticket right now. Check out the trailer:
I know we’re supposed to fear for the “couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive”, but my wackadoodle radar is landing straight on the home couple (who I *think* JLaw and Javier Bardem play), not the least of which is because Bardem is so great at psychotic killers. So, I guess it’d be brilliant if he really is the victim, but uh …
… I don’t think so. And, Lawrence doesn’t know her husband is a crazed killer/demon? (it’d be brilliant if she were one as well); this is just the sort of breakaway role (not comedy and not Passengers) she needed to do.
With the score by Jóhann Jóhannsson (Sicario, Prisoners, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049), and screenplay written by Aronofsky, mother! also stars Domhnall’s younger brother (and Brendon’s son), Brian Gleeson, Jovan Adepo and Kristen Wiig. It’s set to premiere (in competition) at the Venice Film Festival later this month, and for a September 15th wide release.
