Steven Spielberg Gives His Picks for Women Directors Who Should Be Oscar Nominated This Year

As noted by Natalie Portman at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, the nominations for best director were all male, and what a bunch of horse hooey we all know that is.

Oh Ron, it’s not really funny, especially to people like Patty Jenkins.

Er, wait a minute … apparently Jenkins did think Portman’s jab was amusing, and well-placed.

What could you say? It made me laugh, and it made me smile. Look, it’s been a little glaring that women directors don’t get nominated so often and it is odd. Particularly when their films are being celebrated in every other way, so I thought it was interesting to highlight it. And what a difficult category to present without saying something about it, so she did it so perfectly.”

Speaking of Jenkins, her name is on someone’s list, and that someone has a few picks for women directors who should be among the Oscar nominations this year. Indeed, Steven Spielberg’s mentions should all have been Golden Globe nominated, and we’re hoping the Academy doesn’t repeat their omission.

There’s also a watershed happening right now, slowly, maybe not fast enough, for women directors. I mean you have Patty Jenkins. We have some amazing women that have come forward, you know Mudbound and Lady Bird. This is a pretty incredible year, and I think you’ll be seeing some nominations. I’m predicting at the Oscars this year for a woman director, if not several.”

Let’s hope Spielberg’s guesses are spot on, and that Jenkins, Dee Rees and Greta Gerwig ALL receive their due nominations, and one of them WINS.
