Let’s be honest, what we loved about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was more about the magic, the creatures and the effects than it it was about Eddie Redmayne’s bland (sorry!), floppy-haired hero, Newt Scamander — so if we’re off to see the sequel, it’s mostly for those same reasons. Oh, and Jude Law’s beardy, post-Pope, quite differently accented (he’s from London; Gambon was Irish born) Dumbledore is definitely a draw.
Unfortunately, Floppy-hair #1 will also be joined by Floppy-hair #2 (though technically, JD was floppy-haired hero #1 … before he was famous for abusing women), aka ill-chosen Johnny Depp’s Gellert Grindelwald,
a terrible wizard who essentially serves as this series’ Voldemort. Casting aside, this first trailer brings the magic (yeah, I said it) and for that reason, we are excited. I do wonder, though, why the music sounds so Marvelicious (Avenger-y) near the end.
Critters and magic and effects, oh my!
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald also stars Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, and Claudia Kim; it hits theaters November 16th.
