Winona Ryder’s Two Longtime Crushes Adorably Snuggle, as Details on Stranger Things‘ Third Season Emerge

Mama Byers had a crush on … Wesley Crusher! Who doesn’t? Who knew?

At this weekend’s 35th Paley Festival in Los Angeles, the cast of Netflix’s Stranger Things gathered to talk about seasons past and future, and among the reveals was Winona Ryder’s teenage crushes, both of whom just happened to be present. Moderator Wil Wheaton, aka Star Trek:  The Next Generation‘s forever ah-dorable Wesley, and Joyce Byers’ ill-fated Season 2 love interest, Bob, aka Sean Astin, were named as the objects of her infatuation — and everybody say, “Aw!”

Astin returned the affection, saying his Season 2 high point was that he got to kiss Ryder.

Speaking of youthful crushes, during the panel, a few reveals about Stranger Things‘ upcoming third round were made by executive producer Shawn Levy, including that both Eleven and Mike (Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard) and Lucas and Max (Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink) would open the new season as couples.

Whether they stay together remains to be seen.

Mike and Eleven and are going strong, so that’s a relationship that continues, and same with Mad Max and Lucas. But, again, they’re like 13- or 14-year-old kids, so what does romance mean at that stage of life? It can never be simple and stable relationships and there’s fun to that instability” (Levy).

Brown said she was happy in the second season to have another girl to pal around with, and that she and Sadie Sink (Max) have gotten to be friends.

I was like, “I love her, also, another girl.” It was like, “Oh my god, come have a sleepover!”

Another Season 3 tidbit involves the spectacularly coiffed Steve Harrington.

Due to his growing popularity, Joe Keery’s “Dad Steve” will be more prominently featured.

We’ll definitely get to see some more of Steve Harrington in Season Three, and I’ll just say we won’t be abandoning the Dad Steve magic. I don’t want to say much more, but I literally feel that we were walking along and we stumbled onto a gold mine with Dad Steve” (Levy).

Levy also noted that the series’ third outing will have (not unlike Mr. Robot) a Back to the Future vibe.

Finally, series favorite David Harbour, aka Chief Hopper, expressed a sweet sentiment about playing caretaker to Eleven …

I don’t have a child. All of my experiences of love have either been romantic or my parents or a dog. [Through my character, I discovered] a love that was human but pure, like you would take a bullet for someone.”

and Millie Bobby Brown feels much the same about how her onscreen relationship with Harbour played out:

Those scenes were so raw and real. The reward is, to be honest, the scenes. We are like father and daughter.”

Stranger Things will return to Netflix with eight episodes in 2019.
