As anyone who’s read his books knows, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin clearly likes messing with fans (anyone seen anything about when The Winds of Winter will be released?), and his latest big announcement is no exception. Throwing out a series of cryptic clues in a post titled “Yowza” — tagged with “television” — it looks like he may be alluding to how many of those Game of Thrones prequels HBO has been picked up to go to series — or at least the pilot stage.
Using a series of purposely misleading photos of hands with different numbers of fingers held up …
… combined with these quotes:
One for all and all for one.
The dragon has three heads.
I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.”
Martin’s hints seem to land on the number three — “One for all …” is from The Three Musketeers; “The dragon …” appears an overt clue (alluding to Daenerys’ vision of Rhaegar in the House of the Undying [A Clash of Kings]; “Plunk your … ” along with the Andy’s Gang Froggy avatar is often used by Martin to make announcements (he also opens this blog entry with Froggy’s catchphrase “Hiya, kids! Hiya hiya hiya!”); and “I could tell you …” is from Doyle’s third Sherlock Holmes novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles.
So, either HBO has green-lighted three of the four possible series,
or I have no bleeping idea what George is on about.
