***Spoiler Warning: Spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale follow. Spoilers***
Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the bleakest series you’ve ever seen. Most people, including me, had to watch in small doses just to breathe through the tense horrors that are so well presented, our hearts were pounding every single episode. Sometimes we didn’t know to clap for its excellence — actors, writing, direction, production, cinematography — or to run and hide under our beds, in fear that it sometimes felt a little too close to reality … what our reality could become.
Less than a couple weeks ago, the excitement of a great cast addition reminded the series would soon return, and the first teaser gave hope that Elisabeth Moss’ June Osborne aka Offred was, if not free, at least able to fight back. Now pregnant with (presumably) Nick’s (Max Minghella) child, June has even more reason to escape — perhaps to Canada where Moira (Samira Wiley) met up with Luke (O. T. Fagbenle). But in mere seconds, this dark, new trailer hints at things much worse than what we saw in the first season; things I’m not sure we really want to know.
Since Season 2 goes well beyond what readers knew from Margaret Atwood’s brilliant book, there’s no telling what will happen upon the series’ return, April 25th. Also joining this round will be Cherry Jones as June’s mother, Holly, and Clea DuVall as Emily/Ofglen’s (Alexis Bledel) wife, Sylvia.
