Netflix Wins All-Out Bidding War for Ryan Murphy and Sarah Paulson’s New Series, Ratched *Updated: Holy Casting Coup!

(Editor’s note:  This piece was originally published September 7, 2017)

Hot damn! It must feel out of this world to be at the top of your game like the fabulous Sarah Paulson, who’s won awards and our devotion, alike. Her collaborations with Ryan Murphy on American Horror Story and American Crime Story have made the pair so fiercely sought after that Apple, Hulu and Netflix just had an all-out bidding war to gain the rights to their next venture, a Nurse Ratched origins story.

On the one hand, it’ll be nice to see Paulson on the other side of the asylum door;

on the other, holy yikes! Nurse Ratched!

Of course, we all know our goddess, Sarah will absolutely kill in the role; probably win a kazillion more awards. And with Murphy at the helm, Mildred Ratched’s becoming and “murderous” journey through multiple mental health facilities will be bananas crazy. Even having just now gotten the news, I’m practically frothing at the mouth to watch. No wonder everyone wanted the project.

Adding to the series’ appeal is executive producer, Michael Douglas, who also produced the 1975 multiple Academy Award winning film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, based on Ken Kesey’s novel. Murphy will direct the first episode, and the script was penned by newcomer, Evan Romansky.

The 18 part series is expected to air in mid-2018 2020.

*Updated January 15, 2019

As announced by series creator, Ryan Murphy, the Ratched cast has expanded in beyond brilliant and big-name ways. Roles have yet to be divulged, but just look at the amazing talent Murphy has (once again) amassed:

Sharon Stone

Judy Davis

Cynthia Nixon

Harriet Harris

Amanda Plummer

Corey Stoll

Jon Jon Briones

Hunter Parrish

Finn Wittrock

Charlie Carver

We can’t wait to hear more details about the series, which Sarah Paulson is also producing. Ratched will air on Netflix in 2020.
