Smile, Because Joaquin Phoenix Is Taking DC’s Joker Next Level

I haven’t lusted after a DC movie this hard since Wonder Woman.

In yet another role he seems born to play (see Freddie Quill, Theodore, Jimmy Emmett, Commodus), Joaquin Phoenix whips out his brilliant broken psyche, that underlying melancholy he’s so good at slipping under a smile, to offer up the softer side of a psychopath for our viewing pleasure. And honestly, I can’t think of the last trailer that so affected me. I’m torn between wanting to give Gotham’s grinning villain a hug and being utterly terrified of what’s to come. Here, have a look for yourself.

With a screenplay by Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Due Date) along with Scott Silver, the director’s going for a Raging Bull/Taxi Driver vibe, and consider that nail hit on the head, even as you let out a little internal scream at the thought Arthur Fleck was almost played by …

… yeah, bullet dodged and perfection achieved:

This shot is giving me serious Jame Gumb vibes.

Joker also stars Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Zazie Beetz, Shea Whigham, Bill Camp, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, and Josh Pais; it hits theaters October 4, 2019.

FYI, that’s Jimmy Durante singing Make Someone Happy.
